Brisbane Martials Arts Academy is committed to providing services to people of all ages, children, young people, and adults, to assist them to learn martial arts with a view to improving their physical and mental development.

Statement of Commitment

Every child at Brisbane Martial Arts Academy has the right to feel safe – culturally, emotionally and physically.

We recognise the role we have in martial arts instruction in creating inclusive, culturally safe and nurturing environments filled with positive interactions that support children’s physical and mental development, social and emotional development, and allow children a sense of belonging.

By working together, we can ensure that every student feels safe, secure and self-confident.

We commit to:

  • creating a culture that promotes wellbeing and self-regulation
  • putting children, their voice, rights, and dignity, as a centre of our practices
  • supporting inclusive and culturally safe and nurturing environments, rich with quality relationships and interactions
  • embracing a safeguarding culture through the way we speak and act, at every level of our organisation
  • having zero tolerance for any form of inappropriate interaction with children or use of inappropriate discipline.

Our values

We value mutual respect, open communication, enthusiasm and continual learning, which reflects the culture that we are committed to promoting and achieving. We commit to cultural safety as a core value. We believe that we can help build respect and appreciation for a diverse community by:

  • respecting and celebrating each student’s unique values and cultural background
  • understanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and contemporary society
  • ensuring every student, family, instructor and staff is treated equally, regardless of culture, religion, gender, ability or needs.

Our instructors

We support our instructors to act collectively and collaboratively in the best interests of children, all students and each other. Instructors will nurture a culture of learning that is based on professional curiosity and mutual respect for the many ways of knowing, understanding and interacting with the world, including culturally diverse and Indigenous knowledge, respect and understanding.

We embrace an approach to professional practice that supports each child’s opportunity to achieve their full potential. Continual professional development, learning and training is integral to our instructor program and further promotes our values, teachings, and instructor and student physical and mental development. All instructors have current First Aid and CPR training. All staff working with children have mandatory clearances to work with children (Blue Card Working With Children check).

A copy of our Code of Conduct is available upon request. It outlines expected standards of behaviour of all stakeholders interacting with children and young people, including staff, volunteers, students/families, visitors and guests. It also includes our complaints handling policy.
