Weaponry
The Brisbane Martial Arts Academy offers Weaponry Courses at the Headquarters, 61 Kent Street Hamilton to Adult students of any rank and Junior Blue and Brown Belts over 13 years of age that are currently registered with Sakura Hana Ryu.
Kenjutsu means the “method or technique of the sword” whereas Kendo is the “way of the sword” and Iaido is the “drawing of the sword from its scabbard, cutting an opponent, removing the blood from the blade, and then replacing the sword in its scabbard”.
Our Beginners Kenjutsu Course will be using the bokken (or bokuto) which is a wooden sword. The weapons course is designed to introduce the student to a variety of sword techniques by first understanding the difference between Kenjutsu, Kendo and Iaido. The student will also learn about the various sword parts and the sword grip. From here they will practice various stances (kamae) and then move on to learning some basic strikes with particular reference to distance. Once the student has developed skill in the above Kihon Waza (basics or fundamentals) then they can then start to practice with an Uke (training partner). Other skills will be developed during the course will include Ukemi Waza (breakfalls with the sword) and a series of Kata (drills) with an Uke (training partner).
Bojutsu means “staff technique” and is the Martial Art of using the Bo (staff). Staffs are perhaps one of the earliest weapons used by humankind. Bojutsu techniques often resemble empty hand techniques following the philosophy that the weapon is an extension of the body and once the student has mastered the techniques of the body then they can master the weapon as an extension of the body.
Our Beginners Bojutsu Course will be using the bo which is a 6 foot wooden staff. The Weapons course is designed to introduce the student to a variety of bo techniques including the fighting stances (kamae) and then move on to learn some basic strikes with particular reference to distance. Once the student has developed skill in the above Kihon Waza (basics or fundamentals) then they can then start to practice with an Uke (training partner) and learn some basic Kata (drills) both on their own and with an Uke (training partner).
